Clinical Pilates Program

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates which focuses on the balanced development of the body.

The six principles of Pilates are: centering, control, flow, breath, precision and concentration.

Its foundation is alignment and strengthening of the core muscles -- the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and the back. As core strength increases, so does stability and control, allowing a body to move freely and efficiently.

REHAB at Nuuanu integrates these Pilates principles into our patient’s rehabilitation programs using classical Pilates apparatus in our custom-designed studio. Our equipment includes specifically designed pieces to meet the unique rehabilitation challenges of all of our patients from the elite athletes to those recovering from a stroke. This is what we call Clinical Pilates.

REHAB therapists utilize Pilates to successfully treat many conditions and diseases including:

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder impingement/tendonitis
  • Hip bursitis
  • Ankle and knee injuries
  • Total joint replacements
  • Multiple Sclerosis
